Starts Clinic From Olympic Coach Helps Swimmers Improve Their Starts
Thirty-five 14- and older City of Mason swimmers recently attended an elite
starts clinic at the Mason Municipal Aquatic Center. The clinic was led by
Steve Jungbluth, a world-renowned coach who has worked with some of the
best swimmers in the world.
During the clinic, Jungbluth taught the swimmers the specific drills that they need to improve their starts. He also used video analysis to help them identify and correct any flaws in their technique. In addition, Jungbluth discussed the mental strategies that swimmers need to be successful.
The swimmers who attended the clinic were very impressed with Jungbluth’s knowledge, expertise, and storytelling. They also found the drills and video
analysis to be very helpful. After the clinic, they were confident that they
would be able to improve their starts.
One of the swimmers who attended the clinic was 15-year-old Avery
Althouse. Avery said that she had always struggled with her starts. However,
after attending the clinic, she felt much more confident about her ability to
improve. She said that she was particularly grateful for Jungbluth’s use of
video analysis. She said that it was very helpful to see herself in action and
to get feedback from Jungbluth on how she could improve.
Another swimmer who attended the clinic was 18-year-old Stanford bound
Gibson Holmes. Gibson said that he had always been a good starter, but he
knew that he could still improve. He said that he learned a lot from Jungbluth
about how to get off the block more quickly and how to generate more power
from his arms in the start. He said that he was confident that he would be
able to use what he learned at the clinic to improve his times at next week’s
National Championship.
The Manta Ray coaching staff was also able to learn from Steve as well.
Steve spent two hours talking with the coaches about the drills and concepts
he uses with his athletes plus the coaches learned a lot from the start clinic
with the athletes.
